"Free Flight" was composed by Marilyn Harris in the rondo form and features the flute and piano in a "jazzy" style. After a short, rubato opening by the flute and piano, the tempo increases as the piano repeats a syncopated rhythmic motif which is the underpinning for the rest of the piece. The flute enters playing a melody (the "A" section) with exciting jazz rhythms and interesting intervalic jumps. This is followed by a contrasting "B" section, a repeat of the "A" section followed by a solo piano "C" section. After returning to the "A" section, a "D" section is followed by a variation of the "A" section. After an exciting romp through the many twists of this rondo form, it quickly comes to a relaxed and satisfying conclusion. "Free Flight" is a GRADE 4 flute solo and highlights the performer's mastery of syncopated rhythms, varied articulations, large intervalic jumps and contrasting dynamics. The duration is approximately 4 minutes. A solo flute part and piano score is included. Available only through this website from Sound Studio Publications. |
